Shrine Trails

Step into the quiet tranquility and vibrant energy of Song of the Morning as you explore the shrine trails that wind throughout the property. Each trail leads to a bench where you can relax and immerse yourself in Mother Nature’s gentle embrace. Enjoy the forest’s vistas and views and the river’s rapids and pools. You may be greeted by white-tail deer and sandhill cranes, bald eagles and butterflies, or other wildlife who make their home here.

“Whenever you feel the leaves moving and swaying, feel the gentle whisper of God. It is God’s breath that has touched the leaves which whisper to us of the gentleness of His presence.”

— Paramahansa Yogananda

  • Lake Shrine Trail

Beginning near the Lodge, this rolling path meanders amongst towering pines. It once led to a man-made lake, but now ends with an open view of a newly-created wetland. Look up and you may see an eagle or a hawk sitting atop a tree or flying overhead. (1/4 mile)

  • Yogananda Shrine Trail

Two different forest trails lead to an overlook with expansive views of the river below and the sky above. From the Domes, walk downstream along the river to an open meadow. A path gently leads uphill into an aspen grove and past a wetland pond. (1/2 mile) From Retreat Road, walk a shorter, mostly level trail.

  • Christ Shrine Trail

Tall trees embrace you along this forest trail that leads to a serene sylvan nook. Don’t be deterred by the steep uphill at the beginning of this trail from the Main House. After several yards it becomes flat and gentle. A thick mossy carpet covers portions of this path. (1/2 mile)

  • Krishna Shrine Trail

Tucked under the branches of an old beech tree, this shrine is easily reached by walking a few yards off of Krishna Trail (gravel road). Trees and bushes screen the shrine from view of the residential community nearby. A more woodsy approach to the shrine is a moderately steep path off of Retreat Road.

  • Lahiri Mahasaya Shrine Trail

This trail conveniently begins at the parking lot across from the Wheelhouse. Follow it upstream along the Pigeon River past an oxbow pond. You might want to relax on a shaded bench or go inside the small hut. Both places provide an inviting view of the river. (1/4 mile)

  • Sri Yukteswar Shrine Trail

Continue from Lahiri Mahasaya’s shrine up a steeper trail into the woods, passing by two viewpoints with benches. Follow the trail, skirting a residential area, until it reaches a secluded spot nestled at the top of a hill where the hush of the forest surrounds you. (3/4 mile)

  • Babaji Shrine Trail

A winding path through the trees leads uphill to a secluded forest overlook. To get to this shrine, walk up Babaji Trail (gravel road) until you see the trail sign on your left. Once at the shrine, listen to spring water quietly trickling through the ravine below. (1/8 mile from trail sign)

  • Meditation Grove Trail

This shrine is a hidden gem encircled by a grove of trees. It’s easily accessible by going to the intersection of Babaji and Krishna Trails (gravel roads). Follow a grassy two-track loop to discover a narrow pathway that leads into the shrine. Enjoy the vastness of open sky and forest views.
